I first heard Hot Club of Cowtown when they opened for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan at their concert in Fifth Third ballpark in Grand Rapids. I don’t listen to much Western Swing, but I thought they were outstanding. I saw them a second time for a few songs at the East Lansing Folk Festival, back when that was a thing.
Hot Club of Cowtown took a brief hiatus around 2004 when violinist Elana James joined Bob Dylan’s touring band. Hot Club of Cowtown reformed in 2008.
“Ida Red” is a traditional song made famous by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. You may hear a similiarity to Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene”, as Berry used “Ida Red” as its backbone.
